What is Life Coaching?

If you’re anything like me, when you first encountered the concept of “life coaching” you were a little sceptical. I’m here to give you my big picture understanding of what life coaching is, and then I’ll talk a bit about what you get out of life coaching with me.

Life Coaching is a process in which, guided and supported by a coach, you aim to make positive change in your life. The change can come from a shift in perspective, a realignment with values, an adjustment of goals; and it happens within the collaborative relationship between you and your coach.

I recently learned of the term “self-actualisation” which is a total realisation of your potential, your value, and a full development of your appreciation for life. Arguably, no matter the smaller goals and targets, to self-actualise is the ultimate goal of life coaching.

What this actually looks like

Regular appointments where you are: given a safe space to talk, asked open-ended questions, and encouraged to reflect and find the answers within you. Within Life Coaching, there is an understanding that the "coachee" is whole and already possesses everything they need to thrive. It would be my job, as your life coach, to ask the right questions and provide a safe space for you to find those things and lay them down in front of you.

Life coaching is not:

  • Clinical therapy

  • Counselling

  • Treatment for mental health conditions or disorders

  • A piss take

It takes a great depth of emotional intelligence, both of the self and others, to be an effective life coach. It's also a constant learning process, as is everything else. For example, I am never finished with growing and developing my skills in listening and facilitating change for others.

The training I completed in October 2022 (giving me a certification in coaching with the MOE Foundation) expanded my toolbox and deepened my skills in effective questioning and active listening. Over years of mindful and self-reflective practice with writing and journaling, through attending my own counselling sessions, psychotherapy, and having the support of a coach, I've developed the skills and ways of being that allow me to show up in a way that enables others to feel supported and connected enough to make positive change for themselves.

Personally speaking, I try to face up to struggle in my life with a little bit of courage, a pinch of humility, a sh*t tonne of humour, and an intention to be better. If I can enable you to show up with a similar approach to life - a desire for change and a little bit of courage - I am confident I can do a great job in helping you access your potential.
