Where it began

In 2021, as part of my Master’s degree in Song Writing, I set out to understand what would happen if I channelled anger into song. Specifically, anger about a rape I experienced when I was seventeen. What I experienced was total personal transformation.

Anger gave me permission to write about the things that made me silent and brought me the most shame. In writing, and singing, and musically feeling my way through these heavy thoughts, the weight of them lifted and I could feel safe, connected, grateful, joyful, free.

With my songwriting practice as my research, supported by readings in philosophy, psychology, and musicology, the practice-based-research project I began in 2021 has now evolved to encompass a wider significance as both a record and performance for social transformation.

Recent work

I've had the pleasure of presenting and performing my research at various conferences and academic events including the F List for Music's 3rd and 4th Annual Conferences (2024, 2025), and the Centre for Abuse, Trauma, and Suicide Studies re-launch event (2025). I've also been involved in the creation of the SAM Framework (Songwriting-As-Method) with other feminist researchers, co-developing a safe space pledge as part of the That's Me songwriting-as-research project in the Midlands.
